Paul Oomen is composer and artistic entrepreneur. Already during his study – Conservatory of Amsterdam and Universitat der Künste Berlin – Paul Oomen attracted attention with extraordinary musical initiatives and daring musictheatre performances. As a young and upcoming talent he started his career in the opera in 2005 working as a researcher for Pierre Audi – De Nederlandse Opera. Soon after he premiered his 5-part operasoap Melisande & Melisande on invitation by the Oerol festival. In 2006 and 2007 he realised the large scale childrens opera Water in commision by the YO! Opera Festival in Utrecht and his first independent production These fragments I have shored against my ruins, inspired on the life and work of the controversial English playwriter Sarah Kane. Sinds 2008 Paul Oomen started a long term partnership with the Grachtenfestival in Amsterdam for the development of new childrens opera repertoire.
Paul Oomens working method is characterized by a search for actuality of sounds, filosofical subjects and an innovative approach to stage and audience. Often his projects don’t take place in the regular theatres, but on adventurous locations, specially designed spaces or on the internet. For the development of his operas, Paul Oomen initiates collaboration between artists, performers and experts in field of science, technology and philosophy, and often seeks for participation of society itself – children, seniors, labourers and refugees have been actively involved in the creation of his works. In an opera of Paul Oomen the latest developments in technology and design are applied in a ritual for the senses, where a renewed form of encounter, experience and togetherness with the audience is attempted to realize.
His performances were premiered in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, England, Poland, Russia and Hungary and were received with astonishment and bewilderment. His unconventional vision on the operagenre moves friend and foe to take a stand about the function of music and opera in the 21st century society. Besides composer Paul Oomen initiated musical events, publishes texts and lectures about music and art. Paul Oomen lives and works alternately in Amsterdam and Budapest.
